The little town of Staunton

Staunton, Virginia was founded in 1747 and is the home of Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, founded in 1838 and Mary Baldwin University founded in 1842. It is a beautiful hour and a half drive from Roanoke up Route 11 (or you can take the interstate, I81).

It is a sweet little town with events going on all the time. Every Saturday night, they close the street off and have Shop and Dine downtown with music and festivities. The local park has a bandstand and they have concerts on a regular basis.

We stayed at The Serendipity Suite. It is an older home downtown so we were able to walk everywhere. It was a perfect place to stay and we loved sitting on the back porch.

Breakfast and Coffee Recommends:

Reunion Bakery & Espresso is a definite recommend! We loved the pastries and their cold brew is excellent. And they even have cold foam to go on top! Their coffee is from Broad Porch Coffee Company.

Cranberry's Grocery & Eatery's quiche was super yummy. It is a grocery store with coffee and an eatery that serves breakfast all day.

The By and By is another great breakfast spot. They have a garden patio out back that is a nice place to site and relax. They offer Harney & Sons tea which is a great brand and I had English Breakfast and a toasted bagel with egg, cheese, lettuce, and fresh tomato. It was so good.

Another coffee shop that we visited several times is Crucible Coffee. I really love their black tea, Gao Wen, and Mark loved their coffee. We enjoyed sitting outside and watching the passenger train go by. That would be a fun adventure for next time. I would like to do one of their event train experiences. Another recommend is the Gypsy Hill Park. It is huge and they have activities happening there all the time. Look it up!

We stayed two nights and we had dinner at the Blu Point Seafood Co the first night and it was excellent. Mark had fish, scallops, and oysters and I had the fried fish and salad. The only thing I would not recommend is the slaw.

The second night we ate at a local favorite, the Depot Grille. I can't say that I recommend the Depot Grille though.

Remedy Burger is on Beverly Street. We had their smash burgers and fries for lunch and we definitely suggest you eat there. It is a little expensive but I recommend the double smash burger with fries. Even the cheddar cheese is extra.

Another local favorite is The Split Banana, Co. They offer fresh made gelato and sorbet from local grass-fed milk. I had the hot fudge brownie sundae. You can taste how fresh the ingredients are.
